Before we get into our new segment called “Brilliant Reader Challenge,” can we pause for just a moment to appreciate the full awesomeness that is Shohei Ohtani? I’m not actually talking about what he did on Monday. Yes, as a pitcher he went seven innings and won the game. Yes as a hitter, he went four-for-five with a homer, a triple, two singles, a walk, three runs and three RBIs.
But perhaps his most awesome moment came after the game, when someone told him about some ridiculous thing he did as a hitter/pitcher — in this case, he became the first starting pitcher since 1964 to reach base five times.
“I’m sure all the records come because the sample size is so small,” he said through a translator. “So I don’t really look too deeply into it.”
That’s right. Shohei Ohtani is talking small sample sizes.
How many times can we all swoon for Shohei Ohtani?
OK, so I’ve been toying around with this already in the Monday Roundup, but I’m now thinking that the Brilliant Reader Challenge should be a stand-alone feature here at Joe Blogs. I always like adding value for readers here.
The idea is basically this: You send me your challenge by clicking the button below. The challenge can be anything — I suspect most of you will offer a baseball challenge, maybe a football or basketball or golf challenge, but it can really be about anything you want: magic, pop culture, chess, fatherhood, technology, ranking the “Succession” characters in order of awfulness, I mean, I’ll take on anything here for you.
And then I’ll pick the challenges each week and give them my best shot.
Here’s the Challenge Joe button. Let’s give this a try this summer.
