Hope you had a great Thanksgiving! We had some traditional fun here—I smoked our turkey again, and I think this was the best one yet. Katie, our youngest, made an apple pie from scratch, and it looked and tasted like the apple pies you would see old ladies leave out on their window sills in old cartoons. Elizabeth, our oldest, made the gravy and stuffing, like usual—she’s our “it’s not Thanksgiving without gravy and stuffing,” spokesperson. And Margo drill-sergeanted the proceedings to make sure everything was accomplished in a timely manner. After all these years, we seem to have this act down now.
A couple quick reminders:
— For Charlotte folks, I’ll be at the Morrison Barnes and Noble by Southpark tomorrow—Saturday, Nov. 30—at 1 p.m. for an informal little talk about WHY WE LOVE FOOTBALL and everything else, plus I’ll do some signing and inscribing and chatting. It’s a lot to ask you to venture out into the wild on the day after Black Friday, but I’d love to see you there.
— With holiday gift-buying in full gear now, yeah, this is no time to be bashful, I have to say that I can think of a couple great gifts for people in your life:
WHY WE LOVE FOOTBALL, my national-bestselling countdown of the 100 greatest moments in pro, college, high school and all other sorts of football. The Associated Press calls it “A Must Read.” I mean, it’s not a MUST, but I think it’s fun.
WHY WE LOVE BASEBALL, my national-bestselling love letter to the game, which won the Casey Award as best baseball book of 2022 and the National Sports Media Association sports book of the year.
And, not to overshoot here, but they’re designed in such a way that, yeah, they look really cool next to each other on a bookshelf. They are two great books that look great together, or anyway, that’s what I pitched as a slogan to my publishing house shortly before they had me removed from the building.
I like Bears coach Matt Eberflus. For one thing, he’s got a really cool name. He’s an Ohio guy. Also, I’m pretty sure I talked to him at least once or twice when he was coaching at Missouri a few years ago, and thought he was a pretty nice guy. That is unless I’m confusing him with someone else, which is entirely possible.
Anyway… Matt Eberflus did not have a great Thanksgiving*.
*Update: Eberflus was fired LITERALLY as I was writing these words.
