This week’s Notes from a Wandering NFL Fan are pretty quarterback heavy…
Baker!
Last year, J.T. O'Sullivan over at the QB School did a breakdown of how Baker Mayfield hurt the Browns, and it was honestly one of the most savage things I’ve ever seen. It was savage because it was so obviously right; Mayfield was a mess. You could tell O’Sullivan (who is great, by the way, you should check out his videos) felt badly about even making the video. But it was unavoidable. Mayfield’s footwork was terrible, his reads were off, his throws were soft, All of it was just bad.
The Browns were so sure that Mayfield was not their future that they went all in on DeShaun Watson — more on that in a minute.
Mayfield was banished to Carolina, where he was, for the most part, terrible. And a once-promising career seemed to be over.
That’s why Mayfield’s ridiculous and wonderful performance last week for the Los Angeles Rams was one of my favorite things of the 2022 season. He was acquired two days before Thursday night’s game against the Raiders, pure desperation, and then because of injuries, he was forced to play.
And, he was kind of sensational. He led the Rams to a comeback 17-16 victory. But, more,
