OK, so our dear friend Molly Knight has decided to join the party — she is coming up with her own list of the most fun players in baseball. What I love about this (in addition to the fact that I love everything Molly does) is that, I think, she is going about her list in an entirely different way. That’s one of the joys of this wonderful game. Everybody can enjoy it in their own way.
Our list here is built around fun PLAY — that is to say, with the help of Tom Tango, I’ve tried to come up with the 25 players who are the most fun to watch on the field. They are the players who are most likely to do fun things like hit triples or steal bases or make great catches or throw some pitch that blows your mind.
Molly, meanwhile, went to the fans and asked them to nominate their most fun players — and from what I can tell (we will have to wait and see Molly’s list) they naturally chose players whose PERSONALITIES are fun, like Joey Votto and Miguel Cabrera and Joc Pederson and Kiké Hernandez and so on. I love that. Being honest, I cannot imagine a player who, on the field, is LESS fun to watch than a 40-year-old Miggy. Seriously, by my way of looking at things, he might rank as the least fun player in baseball to watch.
But I totally get why he’s fun in a larger way. When you watch him, you know you’re watching a Hall of Famer. That’s fun. His personality is fun. He sparks good memories. And you never know when a burst of youth will strike and he will hit the ball hard like he used to do. He’s nowhere near my list, no, but my list is just one way of looking at the world and baseball. Miggy is fun, too!
Here, though, are my top five fun players in baseball right now.
