This is fun: Margo and I are heading out on a Magic Retreat in Washington, D.C., for the rest of the week… it’s going to be SUCH a blast. They’re opening up the Houdini files for us at the Library of Congress. We’re going on some behind-the-scenes tours. We’re going to hang out with a bunch of amazing magicians, including my friends Joshua Jay and Andi Gladwin, but also this guy, Dani DaOrtiz, who might just be the funniest and most wonderful magician on earth not named Juan Tamariz.* I mean, check this out:
If that doesn’t bring a smile to your face, well, I just don’t know what will.
*Juan Tamariz is a Spanish magician who is, and I say this without meaning any hyperbole, the LeBron, the Pelé, the Brady, the Mays, the Rafa AND Roger AND Novak of magic. He is truly the best there’s ever been. Dani is his friend and disciple.
So, for the rest of the week we’ll mix in some magic with some baseball and whatever else happens to come to mind.
Dodgers 8, Mets 0 (Dodgers lead series, 2-1)
It is absolutely bonkers that the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are without…
Tyler Glasnow
Gavin Stone
Clayton Kershaw
Tony Gonsolin
Dustin May
Bobby Miller
Emmet Sheehan
Even rookie River Ryan
…just pitched their fourth shutout in five games. Baseball!
The catalyst for the Dodgers’ latest shutout was obviously starter Walker Buehler, who pretty much out of nowhere found some of the stuff that seemed lost after his second Tommy John surgery. Everybody knew that Buehler would battle because that’s just him, but based on how he pitched against San Diego, it seemed like he would be bringing a Geodude to an Arceus fight*, and the Mets would have multiple opportunities to tee off.
*I probably did this wrong, but I do not like the whole knife-to-a-gunfight analogy, and so I went with Pokemon. The funny thing is that I have absolutely no idea what a Geodude or Arceus are; I just Googled the strongest and weakest Pokemon (Pokemons? Pokemen?) and those popped up. For many years now, it’s given our oldest daughter, Elizabeth, great joy to know that I truly believe all Pokemon, every single one, is just this guy:
